Mormugao ( Portuguese Mormugão ) is a port city in the Indian state of Goa . It is the capital of a taluka (sub-district) of the South Goa district .

geography

Mormugao is located at the mouth of the Zuari River . Mormugao Bay is considered one of the best natural harbors in South Asia.

The place has 94,393 inhabitants (2011).

history

Under the Portuguese Governor General Augusto César Cardoso de Carvalho (October 28, 1886 to April 1889) the port of Mormugao and the railway line to the border with British India were opened.

During the conquest of Portuguese India by the Republic of India on December 18, 1963, a battle between the Portuguese frigate Afonso de Albuquerque and Indian warships broke out in the port . The Afonso de Albuquerque was destroyed.

economy

Mormugao is one of India's most important ports for iron ore export.
