South Goa is one of the two districts in the Indian state of Goa . The area is 1966 km². The district borders the North Goa District in the north, the Uttara Kannada District in Karnataka in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west. The administrative seat is the city of Margao .

history
The Portuguese founded a colony in Goa in 1510 and expanded it to their present-day borders in the 17th and 18th centuries. These areas then remained with the Portuguese until they were annexed by India in 1961.
Goa and two other former Portuguese enclaves became the union territory of Goa with Daman and Diu . Goa was organized in a single district in 1965. On May 30, 1987, Goa became statehood (while Daman and Diu remained a union territory) and Goa was reorganized into two districts, North Goa and South Goa.

The population was 589,095 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 8.73%, which was below the Indian average. South Goa has a gender ratio of 986 women per 1000 men, a male surplus that is common for India. The district had a literacy rate of 87.59% in 2011 , an increase of almost 7 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is well above the national average of around 74%. Almost 53.3% of the population are Hindus , approx. 36.2% are Christians , 9.9% are Muslims , 0.1% each are Sikhs , Jainas and Buddhists and 0.2% said they did not belong to any religion or belonged to other religions on. Children under 6 years of age are 10.5% of the population. Konkani is the mother tongue of a majority of the people living in southern Goa. Marathi is spoken by a considerable number of people. English and Hindi are understood by a majority of the population. Portuguese is also spoken and understood by a few people.
Almost 64.6% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Margao with 87,650 inhabitants.

The local economy is heavily influenced by tourism. The standard of living, income and level of education are well above the Indian average.
