Quepem is a city in the Indian state of Goa .

The city is that part of the South Goa District . Quepem has municipal council status . The city is divided into 10 wards .

history

The city was founded in 1787 by a Portuguese nobleman named Deão Jose Paulo. Before 1787, the city of Quepem was a dispersed settlement surrounded by dense jungle.

Demographics

The city's population is 14,795 according to the 2011 census. Quepem has a gender ratio of 1033 women per 1000 men and thus a rare surplus of women for India. The literacy rate was 83.6% in 2011. Almost 48% of the population are Christians , approx. 42% are Hindus and approx. 10% are Muslims and less than 1% belong to another or no religion. 10.2% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
