Laxmikant Yashwant Parsekar ( Marathi : लक्ष्मीकांत पार्सेकर; born July 4, 1956 in Harmal, Goa , then part of Portuguese India , now India ) is an Indian politician. From 2014 to 2017 he was Chief Minister of Goa .

biography

Laxmikant Parsekar was born in a small village to Yashwant Parsekar and Chandrabhaga Parsekar into a Hindu family in Goa. In the year of his birth, Goa was still a Portuguese overseas possession and did not join India until 1962. He attended school on site and then studied at the Center of Post Graduate Instruction and Research in Panaji - then a branch of the University of Bombay , now part of Goa University - where he obtained an M.Sc. and B.Ed. acquired. He then worked as the headmaster of the Panchakroshi Secondary School in his birthplace.

In the 1980s Parsekar became active in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was newly founded in 1980 . As a result, Parsekar fell out at times with his family, who were politically part of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). The BJP was only a small splinter party in Goa at the time (it won 1.2% and 0.4% of the vote in the Goa Parliament elections in 1984 and 1989). Parsekar was one of the pioneers in the early years who helped to build the regional party organization in Goa. He also worked as a volunteer in the Hindu cadre organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). From 1994 to 1999 he was General Secretary of the BJP in Goa and from 2000 to 2003 and 2010 to 2012 local party president.

In the parliamentary elections in Goa in 1989 he applied for a public office for the first time and ran for constituency 1-Mandrem , but was defeated by only 2.7% of the vote by the MGP candidate, who received 52.6%. His next candidacy in 1999 in the same constituency was also unsuccessful (22.1% versus 39.6%). In the 2002 election he won the constituency with a narrow majority of 39.1% and in the subsequent elections in 2007 and 2012 for the BJP. From 2012 he was Minister of Health in Goa in the BJP-MGP coalition government.

When the previous BJP Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar, was appointed Defense Minister in the Modi I cabinet as part of a cabinet reshuffle , Laxmikant Parsekar succeeded him in office on November 8, 2014.

In December 2014, Parsekar announced that it would intensify action against drug trafficking and consumption in Goa. Some tourists only come to Goa to consume drugs. In May 2016, after a long discussion about possible racism against African students in India, Parsekar expressed criticism of the behavior of Nigerian students in Goa. He received numerous complaints about the behavior and lifestyle of these students. These are often involved in “drugs [trafficking] and other undesirable things”.

In the parliamentary elections in Goa 2017, the BJP lost significantly. Parsekar was also unable to maintain its constituency 1-Mandrem . As a result, his party colleague Manohar Parrikar, who had already largely organized the BJP election campaign, returned to the leadership position. He managed to bring together a coalition of different parties. On March 16, 2017, Manohar Parrikar was sworn in as the old-new Chief Minister of Goa.
