Cabinet modes I
After the parliamentary elections in India in 2014 , which were successful for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) , the top candidate Narendra Modi was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014. On the same day, the first personal details of the future ministers of the Modi cabinet were also revealed. In addition to the Prime Minister, the cabinet comprised 45 cabinet members, including 23 Union Cabinet Ministers , 10 Ministers of State with independent charge and a further 12 Ministers of State. In terms of personnel, the government was significantly smaller than the previous cabinet, Manmohan Singh II , which had 79 members when it was first introduced. In the new government, several ministries with similar areas of responsibility were merged. Modi thus fulfilled his campaign promise of “maximum governance with a minimum government” ( minimum government, maximum governance ).
Although the BJP had an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha and was not dependent on coalition partners, some positions were also filled by members of other NDA parties. The Shiv Sena , Telugu Desam Party , Shiromani Akali Dal and Lok Janshakti Party each received a ministerial post , and the Rashtriya Lok Samta Party a ministerial post . With Maneka Gandhi , the widow of Sanjay Gandhi , the government also included a prominent member of the Nehru Gandhi family .
Personnel composition at first presentation
In the cabinet, the northern Indian states, thanks to which the BJP had mainly achieved its victory, were proportionally significantly over-represented. Not a single cabinet member came from southern Kerala and populous West Bengal , where the BJP had fared poorly. The 45 cabinet members included a Muslim ( Najma Heptulla ) and two Sikhs ( Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Maneka Gandhi ), Smriti Irani comes from a Hindu family but is married to a Parsees . The remaining 41 cabinet members were Hindus, with upper privileged castes such as Brahmins , Rajputs , Kayasthas , Vaishyas and other influential castes such as Lingayats , Vokkaligas and Marathas, with 20 cabinet posts being significantly over-represented compared to the lower castes (13 cabinet posts, including the prime minister). Three cabinet members were from the Adivasi and three from the Dalit . Seven of the 45 cabinet members were women (including six of the 23 cabinet ministers).
Later cabinet reshuffles
A major cabinet reshuffle took place on July 5, 2016. The cabinet was expanded to include 19 new officials and responsibilities were redistributed. Of these 19 people, 17 were members of the BJP, one of the Republican Party of India (Athwale) and one of the Apna Dal . After that, the cabinet comprised 77 members. Since many of the newly appointed Dalits were Dalits or belonged to the underprivileged classes of the population ( Other Backward Classes ), it was speculated in the press that the reshuffle had also taken place for tactical reasons in order to be better off against Mayawatis Bahujan Samaj in the upcoming parliamentary election in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 Position party and Mulayam Singh Yadavs Samajwadi Party.
