biography

Nitin Gadkari was born in Nagpur, the capital of the Vidarbha region in what was then the state of Bombay (now Maharashtra ). His parents were Jairam Gadkari and Bhanutai Gadkari. In his youth, Gadkari became a volunteer ( swayamsevak ) in the Hindu nationalist cadre organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and in 1976 a member of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyathi Parishad (ABVP), the student organization of the later Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He attended the GS Commerce College at Nagpur University and the University College of Law in Nagpur, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) And a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. While still a student he became president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth organization of the BJP, in Nagpur in 1981 .

From 1989 to 2014 he was a member of the legislative council (the upper house) of Maharashtra (including 1999 to 2005 as opposition leader). From 1995 to 1999 he was Minister for Public Works in the government of Maharashtra under Chief Minister Manohar Joshi in a coalition government made up of Shiv Sena and BJP. During his tenure, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was built. From 2004 to 2009 Gadkari was party president of the BJP in the state of Maharashtra and from 19 December 2009 to 23 January 2013 he was party president of the BJP in all of India. In 2012 there were rumors that Gadkari would take up a second term as BJP party president from 2013 and this was advocated by the RSS. Ultimately, however, Gadkari renounced the candidacy in favor of Rajnath Singh , after allegations of tax evasion had been raised against him and there had been disputes within the party. Gadkari's critics asked how Gadkari, who came from a simple, middle-class background, could become the owner and shareholder of several companies. He was also accused of having an uninspiring leadership style that made it impossible for the BJP to win the 2014 elections.

In the parliamentary elections in India in 2014 , he was elected to the Lok Sabha in constituency 10-Nagpur . From May 27, 2014 he was Minister for Road Transport and Highways in the Modi I Cabinet , Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water and Sanitation from June 4 to November 9, 2014 and Minister for Water Resources, River Development from September 3, 2017 and the Ganges revival.

Gakari has set himself particular political priorities in the development of agriculture, the efficient use of water resources and the development of green, renewable technologies. Gadkari always remained connected to his hometown Nagpur and his home region of Vidarbha and in 2013, as BJP party president, he spoke out in favor of creating a separate state of Vidarbha by separating from Maharashtra.

In the parliamentary elections in India in 2019 , Gadkari was re - elected to the Lok Sabha in the constituency 10-Nagpur and then received the post of cabinet minister for land and waterway transport as well as for small and medium-sized enterprises in the Modi II cabinet.
