List of constituencies in India

The 543 constituencies for the Lok Sabha in the limits as they have been in force since the 2009 election .
Reserved constituencies: reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST)

The following article contains a list of constituencies in India, broken down into individual sections, as they are currently used in India's elections to the Lok Sabha (the all-Indian parliament) and to the regional parliaments ( Vidhan Sabhas ) of the Indian states and Union territories .

Based on the 2001 census, the Delimitation Commission of India (Indian Delimitation Commission ) established new constituency boundaries for most states and Union territories in 2002 . The 6 states of Arunachal Pradesh , Assam , Nagaland , Manipur , Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir , where the previous constituency boundaries remained in place (see Delimitation Commission of India # New constituency boundaries from 2008 ), were excluded from the redefinition . These constituency boundaries came into effect on February 19, 2008 and are expected to remain unchanged until at least 2026. However, changes may arise as new states are created. The constituency boundaries have been tailored so that they do not cross state borders. The count used in the following follows the official count of the Indian Election Commission of India . The constituencies of the Lok Sabha and those of the regional parliaments are numbered consecutively in each federal state and union territory starting with "1".

The constituencies for the respective regional parliaments were formed as subsets of the Lok Sabha constituencies. For example, in the state of West Bengal, each Lok Sabha constituency is divided into seven constituencies for the parliament of West Bengal. Since West Bengal has 42 constituencies for the Lok Sabha, there are accordingly 7 × 42 = 294 constituencies for the parliament of West Bengal. The Indian constitution stipulates that a state parliament must have at least 60 members. As a result, small states with only one or two Lok Sabha constituencies must be divided into many constituencies for the regional parliament. The small states of Sikkim, Goa and Mizoram were exempted from this minimum regulation by an Act of Parliament and have fewer than 60 constituencies for their parliaments.

A special feature of Indian suffrage is that individual constituencies are reserved for the so-called Scheduled Tribes (ST) or Scheduled Castes (SC) . This is intended to ensure an appropriate representation of minorities and underprivileged social groups. In the 2014 election , 79 of the 543 constituencies were reserved for ST and 41 for SC.

In the following, the constituencies of the Lok Sabha are capitalized and the constituencies of the regional parliaments are listed in normal spelling for better differentiation.

Andhra Pradesh after the separation of Telangana

Lok Sabha constituencies in Andhra Pradesh after June 2, 2014 reserved for scheduled castes (SC) reserved for scheduled tribes (ST)

The 175 constituencies to the parliament of Andhra Pradesh after June 2, 2014 reserved for scheduled castes (SC) reserved for scheduled tribes (ST)

The constituencies were simply continued after the division of the state in 2014. This was possible because the division took place along the constituency boundaries. Accordingly, the downsized Andhra Pradesh had 25 constituencies for the Lok Sabha (corresponding to the constituencies 18 to 42 listed above) and 175 constituencies for the federal parliament. According to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act 2014 , the law that regulated the separation of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, it is provided that the constituencies of the Andhra Pradesh parliament should be re-delimited. The aim is to increase the number of constituencies to the Andhra Pradesh parliament from 175 to 225. This new definition has not yet taken place, as extensive changes to the law, including a constitutional amendment, would be necessary. In November 2016, a spokesman for the Indian Ministry of the Interior dampened hopes that the number of constituencies would soon increase. A parliamentary majority for such a constitutional amendment is currently not available.

Telangana

The 17 Lok Sabha constituencies in Telangana: reserved for scheduled castes (SC) reserved for scheduled tribes (ST)

The 119 constituencies of the Parliament of Telangana: reserved for scheduled castes (SC) reserved for scheduled tribes (ST)

On June 2, 2014 Telangana , which previously belonged to Andhra Pradesh , became a state of its own. The constituencies were initially simply taken over from the former Andhra Pradesh. Telangana then comprised 17 Lok Sabha constituencies (three for scheduled castes and two for scheduled tribes ). Each Lok Sabha constituency is divided into 7 constituencies for the Parliament of Telangana (119 in total, including 19 for scheduled castes , 12 for scheduled tribes ).

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act 2014 , the law regulating the separation of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, provides that the constituencies of Telangana should be re-delimited from Telangana to Parliament. This will increase the number of constituencies to the state parliament from 119 to 153. This new definition has not yet taken place, as extensive changes to the law, including a constitutional amendment, would be necessary. At least until the end of 2016, no parliamentary majority appeared to be available.
