Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu ( Gujarati : દાદરા અને નગર હવેલી અને દમણ અને દીવ Dādrā ane Nagar Havelī ane Damaṇ ane Dīv , English : Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu ; abbreviation: DNHDD) is a union territory in western India . It was created on January 26, 2020 by merging the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli as well as Daman and Diu . It is made up of four areas that were part of Portuguese India until 1954 and 1961, respectively. The administrative seat is Daman .
geography
The Union territory consists of four spatially separated areas. Three of these areas - Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli - are only a few kilometers apart on the eastern side of the Gulf of Khambhat . The coastal city of Daman and the enclave of Dadra are completely enclosed by the state of Gujarat , while Nagar Haveli also borders Maharashtra and in turn encloses the small enclave of Maghval, which belongs to Gujarat. The fourth area - the Diu district - is 200 km away on the west side of the Gulf of Khambhat and includes the island of Diu and a small area on the mainland. Diu is also surrounded by Gujarat.
history
The territory of the Union Territory was formerly part of the Portuguese colonial possession in India. Portugal emerged as a colonial power in India from the 16th century. In later centuries, however, it was overtaken by other naval powers, in particular England and the United Kingdom, and from the 17th century onwards, Portuguese colonial ownership in India was limited to a few, non-contiguous, small tracts of land on the west coast of India. When British India became independent in 1947 in the form of the states of India and Pakistan , the new Indian government under Jawaharlal Nehru also demanded that Portugal surrender its colonies. This was rejected by the Portuguese government under António de Oliveira Salazar . In the area of Dadra and Nagar Haveli , which formed an exclave within Indian territory, Indian nationalists took power in 1954 and de facto annexed the area to India without Portugal being able to do anything about it. On December 18, 1961, India occupied the remaining Portuguese colonies of Goa and Daman and Diu in a flash and on the following day the new union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu was formed from it. This union territory existed until May 30, 1987, when Goa was separated from it and made a state of its own. On July 10, 2019, plans by the Modi government became known to unite the two remaining union territories Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli into one union territory for reasons of cost and efficiency. This was made a reality with the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Act, 2019 , which went into effect on January 26, 2020.
politics
Despite its small population, the territory has not one but two seats in the Lok Sabha , the Indian parliament. The district of Dadra and Nagar Haveli forms one constituency, the second the districts of Daman and Diu.
