Coorg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coorg (Kurg, Kodagu) was a province of British India in the Western Ghats in what is now the Indian state of Karnataka . A Hindu principality had existed here since the Middle Ages, and since the 17th century under Rajas of the Haleri dynasty . In 1681 Madikeri (Mercara) became the capital. 1780-88 Coorg was occupied by Mysore and in 1790 became a British protectorate . The last Raja, Cikka Virarajendra II. Udaiyar, was deposed in 1834 after murdering several family members; the British annexed Coorg and made it a province. Coorg was administered together with Mysore from 1869-81 and in 1941 had an area of 4125 km² and 188,000 inhabitants. Under the Indian Constitution of 1950 (see History of India ), Coorg was a Category C state with a President-appointed Chief Commissioner. In 1956 it became the Kodagu district of the state of Mysore, which has been called Karnataka since 1973.
