Madikeri (earlier Anglicizing Mercara ; Kannada : ಮಡಿಕೇರಿ ) is a city in southern India .

It is the capital of the Kodagu district in the state of Karnataka and about 250 kilometers from Bangalore . The place is at an altitude of 1166 meters above sea level. Madikeri has about 34,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

The closest major cities to Madikeri are Mangalore to the west and Mysore to the east.

Madikeri is known for its cardamom growing .
