Damanganga river near Silvassa

Silvassa ( Gujarati : સિલવાસા , Marathi : सिल्वासा , Silvāsā ) is a city with almost 100,000 inhabitants in the Indian Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu . It is the capital of the Dadra and Nagar Haveli districts .

location

Silvassa is located on the Damanganga River around 30 km from its mouth at Daman in the Arabian Sea . The closest major city is Vapi, only about 20 km (driving distance) northwest . The climate is hot and humid; Rain almost only falls in the monsoon months from mid-June to early October.

population

The city's population has grown rapidly in recent decades (1991: approx. 11,000 / 2001: approx. 50,000). Approx. 88% of the population are Hindus , approx. 8% are Muslims and approx. 2% are Christians; the rest is attributable to other religions ( Jains , Sikhs , Buddhists ). A male population of around 56,000 is compared to only around 42,000 women, which is largely due to the immigration of labor, but the widespread practice of aborting female fetuses in northern India also plays a role that should not be underestimated. Speak Gujarati , Hindi and English .

economy

Like the neighboring Vapi, Silvassa is one of the fastest growing cities in India. Small and medium-sized industrial companies of all kinds have settled in the area around the village.

history

Dadra and Nagar Haveli was a Portuguese colony from 1780 to 1954 ; in 1885 the capital was moved from Dararà to Silvassa, which until then had only been a village. The Portuguese name of the city was Vila de Paço d'Arcos . The name Silvassa is said to be derived from the Portuguese word silva for "forest".

Attractions

  • Today only the church Our Lady of Piety reminds of the Portuguese time of Silvassa with its remarkable baroque interior .
  • The main attraction of the city is the Tribal Museum , which reminds of the culture of the Adivasi people (mostly Warli ), Dadras and Nagar Havelis, which has now largely disappeared . Equipment for field cultivation, various household items, textiles and traditional costumes as well as handicrafts will be presented .
