Vapi ( Gujarati : વાપી, Hindi : वापी) is an industrial city with approx. 165,000 inhabitants in the southeast of the Indian state of Gujarat .

location

Vapi lies between the former Portuguese possessions Daman and Dadra , which today belong to the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu . The city is located approx. 176 km (driving distance) north of Mumbai and approx. 100 km south of Surat at an altitude of approx. 27 m above sea level. d. M. The climate in Vapi is hot and humid; Rain actually only falls in the monsoon months from mid-June to early October.

population

About 77.5% of the population are Hindus , about 18.5% are Muslims and about 3% belong to the Jain religion ; the rest is attributable to other religions ( Sikhs , Buddhists and Christians). The male part of the population exceeds the female population by approx. 25,000, which is mainly due to the immigration of male workers from the surrounding villages; But the practice of targeted abortion of female fetuses also plays a not insignificant role. They speak Gujarati and Hindi .

economy

The inhabitants of the city lived mainly from handicrafts, retail trade and services of all kinds. In the last decades, however, numerous medium-sized industrial companies have emerged; they are accompanied by an equally large number of training institutions.

history

Vapi was only a small town until the mid-20th century and only saw a huge influx of workers after the establishment of an industrial park in 1967.

Attractions

Vapi has no historical or culturally significant sights. Only the nearby town of Daman and its beaches offer a little variety on the weekends.
