A Postal Index Number or PIN is introduced on August 15, 1972 Zip code of India Post .

The Indian postcodes have six digits, the first number describes one of the nine postal zones (eight regional, one functional). The second digit defines the sub-region, the third the sorting district. The remaining three digits stand for individual post offices.
