Germann was the son of Johannes Germann, Obervogt zu Lütisburg , and brother of the later Prince Abbot of St. Gallen, Kilian Germann , and Gallus Germann (also Obervogt zu Lütisburg). As an officer, he was in the service of the French crown for many years. After returning home, he supported his brother, Prince Abbot Kilian Germann, during the turmoil of the Reformation. Contemporaries described Hans Germann as "a solid, brave, but rough, frivolous fellow warrior who sold many of his fellow countrymen to France for disdainful gold".

Several portraits of Hans Germann have come down to us, one of them a glass painting from 1550, which is located in Kreuzenstein Castle on the Danube near Vienna.
