Valsad is a district in the western Indian state of Gujarat .
The area is 3008 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Valsad .
geography
The district encloses Daman and Dadra and borders on Nagar Haveli - areas that formerly belonged to Portuguese India and are now three of the four areas of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu .
history
The district was created in 1964.
population
The population is 1,705,678 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 20.92%. Valsad has a gender ratio of 922 women per 1000 men. It has a literacy rate of 78.55% in 2011, an increase of nine percentage points compared to 2001. Almost 92% of the population are Hindus and around 5.5% are Muslims . Christians make up around 1% of the total population.
The urbanization rate of the district is approximately 37.2%. The largest cities are Vapi (163,630 inhabitants) and Valsad (114,636).
