The Jamnagar District ( Gujarati : જામનગર જિલ્લો ) is one of 26 districts of the Gujarat state in India . The city of the same name Jamnagar is the capital of the district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 1,391,753 people.

history

From pre-Christian times until 1298, the area - like the entire region - was ruled by various Buddhist and Hindu rulers. The first civilization was the Indus culture . The area was ruled by the Rajputs in the Middle Ages and was involved in constant battles with Muslim armies. Nevertheless, it could never be conquered and had to pay tribute only temporarily to Muslim dynasties ( Sultanate of Delhi , Sultanate of Gujarat and the Mughals ). In 1540 the region became an independent state as the Principality of Nawanagar . From 1812 to 1947 it belonged as an independent prince state to the Halar Prant within the Kathiawar Agency and thus administratively to the British administrative region Bombay Presidency . With the independence of India in 1947, the Kathiawar Agency became the state of Saurashtra . The district of Nawanagar / Jamnagar did not become part of the Bombay state again until 1956 . In 1960 this Indian state was divided and the area came to the newly created state of Gujarat.

In these ten years the population increased by more than 250,000 people. The following table shows the exact numbers:
