The Sabarkantha District ( Gujarati : રાજકોટ જિલ્લો ) is a district in the state of Gujarat in India . The city of Himatnagar is the capital of the district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 2,428,589 people.

geography

The district is located in the north of the state of Gujarat on the border with Rajasthan . In the north, northeast and east it borders on the districts in the state of Rajasthan. In the west Sabarkantha is bordered by the districts of Banaskantha and Mehsana district , in the southwest by the district of Gandhinagar , in the south by the district of Kheda and in the southeast by the district of Panchmahal . It consists of several topographically different areas. In the northwest of the district lies the Idar Upland (highlands of Idar). In the north and east of the area lies Sabar Kantha Aravalli , which consists of valleys and hills. Sabarmati Plain (Plain of Sabarmathi) and Khari Plain (Plain of Khari) occupy the southwest part of Sabarkantha. In the central south lies Vatrak Meshwa and Majham Plain , a plain with wooded hills.

history

The area has been settled for a long time. Historically, it shared the fate of the neighboring regions. For example, today's main town was founded in 1426 by Sultan Ahmed I as a bulwark against the Raos of Idar. In 1848 this city, then called Ahmednagar, was conquered by Hindus under the leadership of Prince Himatsinhji of Idar and renamed Himatnagar.

The current district of Sabarkantha was founded in 1949 from numerous principalities (princely states) and parts of the former Ahmadabad district.

population

The last census in 2011 counted 2,428,589 inhabitants. Of these, 1,244,231 were men (51.23 percent) and 1,184,358 were women. Among the Dalits were 2011 187.685 (7.73 percent), the Adivasi 542,156 (22.32 percent) people. Of the total number of residents, only 363,720 people (14.98 percent) lived in urban areas in 2011. Thus almost 6 out of 7 inhabitants still lived in the country.

As in many parts of India, the percentage of the female population has decreased at times over the past few decades. Nevertheless, the fluctuations within the sexes are within a small range by Indian standards (proportion of women between 48.66 and 49.39% since independence).
