Himatnagar also Himmatnagar ( Gujarati : હિંમતનગર) is a city with approx. 85,000 inhabitants in the northeast of the Indian state of Gujarat .

Himatnagar is located on the Hathmati River about 82 km northeast of Ahmedabad on the main road from Mumbai via Surat and Ahmedabad to Udaipur , Jaipur and finally to Delhi at an altitude of about 145 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is mostly warm and dry; Rain actually only falls during the summer monsoon months .

Almost 75.5% of the population are Hindus , a good 20.5% are Muslims and over 3% belong to the Jain religion ; the rest is attributable to other religions ( Sikhs , Buddhists and Christians ). As is customary in northern India, the male part of the population exceeds the female population by around 10%. They speak Gujarati and Hindi .
economy
The inhabitants of the city live mainly from handicrafts, retail trade and services of all kinds. In the last few decades, medium-sized ceramic and stone processing companies have settled.
history
The foundation of the city under its former name Ahmednagar in 1426 goes to the Sultan of Gujarat Ahmed Shah I. back. The new foundation was fortified by a citadel and a city wall. In the centuries that followed, especially after Gujarat was incorporated into the Mughal Empire (1573), the city experienced a period of decline that did not end until the 20th century. Ahmadnagar was renamed Himmatnagar in 1912 in honor of the then 13-year-old Prince Himmat Singh, the last ruler of the Princely State of Idar .
Attractions
- Very ruinous parts of the former city wall and the citadel have been preserved.
- A stepwell ( Kazi ni Vav ) is in a similarly desolate state.
- There are several Jain temples in and around the city.
