Nawanagar ( Hindi : नवानगर रियासत , Navānagar Riyasat , Gujarati નવાનગર રાજ્ય Navānagara Rajya ) was a princely state of British India in the west of the peninsula Kathiawar in today's state of Gujarat .

history

The principality was in 1535 by Jam Ravalji Lakhaji from the Rajputs - Dynasty of the Rao of Kutch founded (the Jadecha clan). In 1540 he founded the city of Nawanagar , now Jamnagar . The ruler title has been since Vibhaji II. Ranmalji (1852–96) Maharaja Jam Sajib. The dynasty also included other small Indian princely states in Gujarat such as Drhol and Morvi .

Nawanagar was a British protectorate from 1812 to 1947 and in 1941 had an area of ​​9818 km² and 470,000 inhabitants. From 1924 to 1944 it belonged to the Western India States Agency . On August 15, 1947, it became a member of the Saurashtra State Union and on February 15, 1948, it joined India. On November 1, 1956, all princely states were dissolved, Nawanagar was incorporated into the state of Bombay . With the partition of Bombay on May 1, 1960, Nawanagar came to Gujarat as Jamnagar District .

Others

The Jadecha clan was known for killing its female offspring. As early as 1817 it was observed that there were administrative districts in which no female descendants of the clan existed.

The penultimate reigning Maharaja Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji Jadeja (1872-1933) was a famous cricket poker players who played against his rule for the English cricket team and was known for his lavish lifestyle.

From 1877–95 the state had its own post office with its own stamps and until 1947 also its own coins.
