Kathiawar or Kathiawad ( Gujarati : કાઠીયાવાડ) is an approx. 65,000 km² peninsula in northwest India . It belongs to the state of Gujarat .

geography

The peninsula is bounded to the north by the large wetland of the Rann of Kachchh , to the northwest by the Gulf of Kachchh , to the west and south by the Arabian Sea and to the southeast and east by the Gulf of Khambhat . There are no rivers. Inland, the almost uninhabited Barda Hills rise to a height of about 650  m ; this is where the 192 km² Barda Wildlife Sanctuary is located . The highest point, however, is Mount Girnar, approx. 1115  m high, near the city of Junagadh .

economy

In Kathiawar cotton is grown and agriculture is practiced. There are deposits of manganese ore , bauxite and petroleum .

history

Another name for Kathiawar is Saurashtra or (Anglicized) Soruth or Sorath . In the terminology of the British-Indian administration, Kathiawar was equated with Saurashtra. The four districts of the peninsula were Jhalawar, Halar, Sorath and Gohelwar, with Sorath designating the southwest with Junagadh , Porbandar and Jafarabad .
