Rajkot ( Gujarati : રાજકોટ , Rājakoṭ ) is a city in Gujarat , India with around 1.3 million inhabitants (2011 census). It is located on the Kathiawar peninsula , has a university and is a textile industry center .
The city was founded in 1610 by Vibhaji Jadeja and Raju Sandhi . Rajkot was the capital of the princely state named after her and later also became the capital of the short-lived Saurashtra confederation . Mahatma Gandhi lived in the city for a few years when his father was a Diwan (First Minister) here . The house where Gandhi lived is now a museum.
Rajkot is the seat of the district of the same name and the diocese of Rajkot . The city is also the seat of Atul Auto .
