Jamnagar ( Gujarati : જામનગર , Jāmanagar ; formerly Nawanagar ) is the capital of the district of the same name in the western state of Gujarat in India . The city was expanded in the 1920s by Maharaja K. S. Ranjitsinhji , when it was the capital of the princely state of the same name under the name Nawanagar . Today it has about 530,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

Jamnagar is located in the south of the Gulf of Kachchh and has recently become a major industrial location. This is partly due to the decision of Reliance Industries (RIL), India's largest private company, to build the world's largest refinery there. Up until 2008, the refinery was processing around 660,000 barrels per day, making it third in the world. The starting signal for an expansion by 580,000 barrels was given on December 1, 2005, and plans were for the expansion to start operations in December 2008. In 2010 the refinery was the largest in the world. Due to the global economic crisis, the construction of a cracker for the production of ethylene and propylene was delayed, but will be completed by 2014. The construction of a coal gasification plant and facilities for gasifying liquefied natural gas (LNG) are also planned as additions.

To employ the farmers from whom land was bought for the construction of the industrial complex, Reliance Industries created a mango plantation with more than 100,000 trees in 2010, which is to be expanded to 150,000 trees.

The Jamnagar location also benefits from its location in a special economic zone with corresponding tax and customs relief for Reliance Industries Limited (RIL).

Jamnagar is also the location of "Essar Oil", another important Indian refinery.
