Bhavnagar ( Gujarati : ભાવનગર , Bhāvanagar ) is a city in the Indian state of Gujarat with about 594,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is the capital of the Bhavnagar district and the cultural center of the Saurashtra region .

Bhavnagar was founded in 1723 by Bhavsinhji Gohil and named after him. It was the capital of the princely state of Bhavnagar .

For two centuries the coastal city had an important trading port. Today it is known for its cotton trade, the diamond industry and the Alang ship scrap yard about 50 kilometers away . Bhavnagar has an airport.
