geography

Gandhinagar is located on the Sabarmati River , about 30 kilometers north of Gujarat's largest city, Ahmedabad . It consists of 30 sectors. Similar to the example of American cities ( avenues and streets ), there are two categories of intersecting streets - those with letters (K, KH, G, GH, CH, CHH and JA) and those with numbers (1 to 7). The blocks resulting between the streets are labeled with sector numbers, the intersections have a combination of the names of the intersecting streets (KH1, KH2, G1, G2, G3 etc.).

climate

The climate crisis has led to a drastic shortage of drinking water in large parts of India . This is particularly noticeable in Gandhinagar. The city is one of those 21 major Indian cities whose groundwater reserves will be completely depleted in 2020 according to calculations by the government agency NITI Aayog.

history

When the state of Bombay was divided into the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra in 1960 , Ahmedabad was initially designated as the interim capital. Then Gandhinagar was built after Chandigarh as the second planned capital since India's independence and in 1970 the capital of Gujarat was relocated here.

In a massacre at Akshardham Temple on September 25, 2002, 33 people were killed by two armed men and nearly 100 were injured. The National Security Guard was only able to overpower the terrorists after a 13-hour siege.

Sightseeing and education

Gandhinagar has several educational and research institutes. Of india further importance is the INFLIBNET Center (INFLIBNET = Inf ormation and Lib rary Net work), an institution of the University Grants Commission , which is responsible in India for the allocation of research funds to universities. INFLIBNET has the task of coordinating the library system of the universities in India and connecting them with each other through high-speed data networks.

One of the few attractions in the city is the Akshardham temple complex.
