The Sabarmati is a river in western India with a length of about 371 km.

It rises in the Aravalli Mountains in the district of Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan , but flows the longest route through the state of Gujarat , reaches the metropolis of Ahmedabad and flows into the Gulf of Khambhat , part of the Arabian Sea . A smaller part of its catchment area is in Rajasthan (3,124 km²) and the larger part (18,550 km²) in Gujarat.

The river's water is used to irrigate agricultural areas with the help of canals and pumps.

Popular belief

Popular belief says that the Hindu god Shiva once led the goddess Ganga to Gujarat, who created the river. Background of this legend is widespread in much of India's belief that all rivers and water bodies of the country through hidden channels etc. with the Ganges communicate.

Gandhi

In Ahmedabad, on the banks of this river, Mahatma Gandhi established the Sabarmati Ashram as a residence and from here began his non-violent salt march in 1930 in the fight against the British colonial masters.
