University of Delhi building

An Indian university is recognized as a university by the University Grants Commission . The powers and responsibilities of federal universities are set out in the Central Universities Act, 2009 , which also created 12 new universities. The foundation of a federal university takes place through a parliamentary resolution of the Indian parliament. At the moment (2015) there are 46 federal universities spread all over India.
