Ranchi ( Hindi राँची , Rā̃cī ) is the capital of the Indian state of Jharkhand .

It is located on the Chota Nagpur Plateau and has a population of over one million (2011 census). There is cement and heavy industry in the city . The state supreme court is located here, and the city also has a university. In addition to numerous temples and mosques, Ranchi also has St. Mary's Cathedral, the seat of the Ranchi Archdiocese .

The Birla Institute of Technology is located in Ranchi .

Demographics

The city's population is 1,073,427 according to the 2011 census. Ranchi has a gender ratio of 921 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 87.37% in 2011. Almost 64% of the population are Hindus , approx. 16% are Muslims , approx. 9% are Christians and approx. 11% belong to another or no religion. Children under 6 years of age are 11.8% of the population. 20.2% of the population are Scheduled Tribes .
