Dhanbad ( Santali : ᱫᱷᱟᱱᱵᱟᱫᱽ , Dhanabād ) is an industrial city in the Indian state of Jharkhand . It has about 1.2 million inhabitants (2011 census) and is the administrative seat of the Dhanbad district .

The city is located 10 km north of the Damodar river , about 280 km northwest of Kolkata .

In winter, heavy smog often forms over Dhanbad. The air pollution comes from the many coking plants in the region that operate without any exhaust gas treatment. The area around Dhanbad has one of the highest levels of air pollution in all of India.

Buildings

The Damodar Valley Corporation reservoirs can be visited in the area. The largest of them is Maithon Dam , which is about 50 km from Dhanbad.

The city is an important center of the coal and steel industry. Many coal mines and steel works are located in the region. The electrical energy supply of the industrial area is ensured by the reservoirs of the flood dams in the region.

The city is on the direct railway line New Delhi - Kolkata. Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express stop in Dhanbad. In freight transport, both steel for the port in Kolkata and coal for the power stations in New Delhi are loaded in Dhanbad. The city has the second highest volume of freight traffic in all of India. The transports from Dhanbad are the main source of income for the Eastern Railway .

The NH-2 (former Grand Trunk Road ) road also passes Dhanbad. It is the direct connection between New Delhi and Kolkata.
