The Shatabdi Express ( Hindi : शताब्दी रेल, Satabdi rel , Shatabdi Rail ) is a fast - kind of Indian Railways , which stands for speed, punctuality and comfort. The trains reach an average speed of between 50 and 90 km / h, make only a few intermediate stops, guarantee a seat by reserving seats , only run air-conditioned cars and provide catering on site.

Starting from the metropolises of Chennai , Calcutta with the Howrah train station , Mumbai and New Delhi , important large cities and economic regions are served on mostly electrified routes that are around half a day's journey away. The average fare is less than two Indian rupees per kilometer.

Rolling stock

The trains are mostly run by WAP-7 , less often by WAP-5 , on electrical lines , and diesel locomotives of the WDM-3A , WDP-4B and WDP-4D series are used on lines without overhead lines . In almost all Shatabdi trains, the rolling stock consists of LHB cars . These were developed by Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB), today Alstom Transport Germany, at the end of the 1990s and have been used by the Indian Railways since 2000. Some Shatabdi trains hauled by diesel locomotives still run with wagons from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), which are based on a design by the Schweizerische Wagons- und Aufzügefabrik AG Schlieren-Zürich (Schlieren).

history

The name Shatabdi means in Hindi centenary . The train type was introduced in 1988 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru . Other types of express trains are the somewhat more luxurious Swarna Shatabdi Express and the long-haul Rajdhani Express , which connects New Delhi with the capitals of the various states. There is also the Jan-Shatabdi-Express train type , which usually runs without air conditioning and therefore has lower fares.
