Puri ( Oriya ପୁରୀ ) is a city with around 200,000 inhabitants (2011 census) in the Indian state of Odisha on the Bay of Bengal .
Puri is the administrative seat of the district of the same name . Here is the Hindu Jagannath Temple , which non-Hindus are not allowed to enter. Because of this temple, Puri is one of the holy cities of Hinduism and is an important place of pilgrimage . Not least because of this, Puri is a popular destination. The large, elongated sandy beach is mostly teeming with people, but in some places it is heavily littered. The big religious festival Rath Yatra takes place annually in summer .
Only 35 km away from Puri is the Konark Sun Temple . Trips there therefore often begin with a stay in Puri.
The Bring Your Own Film Festival takes place in Puri .
