Markus Sten Naslund (* the thirtieth July 1973 in Örnsköldsvik ) is a retired Swedish ice hockey player and - functionary , who during his playing career between 1990 and 2010, among others in 1169 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers the on position left winger has denied. Näslund, who spent most of his career with the Vancouver Canucks and was the ninth team captain in franchise history between 2000 and 2008 , is one of the most successful Swedish players to have played in North America. Among other things, he was elected to the NHL First All-Star Team for three consecutive years between 2002 and 2004 and received the Lester B. Pearson Award in 2003 .

Career

Markus Näslund began his career in the offspring of the Swedish first division club MoDo Hockey before he was selected as the sixteenth player by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft . On March 20, 1996 he was exchanged for Alek Stojanov . This swap is now considered the best that the Canucks ever did in their club history: Stojanov could never prevail in the NHL, while Näslund developed into a leading player and top scorer.

Näslund has played nine seasons for the Vancouver Canucks since this swap. The first two years in Vancouver were pretty uneventful, he couldn't set any decisive accents. When he was not used at the beginning of the 1997/98 season by the then head coach Mike Keenan , he asked the club to be transferred to another club. However, this request was not granted.

In the following season, Näslund surprised with outstanding performances that eventually made him the top scorer and player with the most points of the team, while this was in a phase of restructuring. In the 2000/01 season he finally achieved his breakthrough when he was appointed team captain by the then General Manager Brian Burke and was again able to achieve new personal bests in goals (41) and points (75). So he led the Canucks to their first play-off participation since 1996. Unfortunately, he broke his leg towards the end of the season, so he could only watch the play-offs as a spectator. The Canucks were eliminated in the first round against the eventual Stanley Cup winner Colorado Avalanche .

However, Näslund recovered well from his injury and was able to break his personal point record again the next season, this time he scored 90 points, including 40 goals.

In the 2002/03 season he finally managed his best haul with 48 goals and 104 points. With this achievement he won the prestigious Lester B. Pearson Award for Outstanding Regular Season Player. However, in terms of the title of best overall points , he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Peter Forsberg of Colorado, who received the Art Ross Trophy . In the end, Näslund was missing two points. He was also unable to receive the Maurice Richard Trophy as top scorer, Milan Hejduk , also from Colorado, scored two more goals than Näslund.

In the following season he led the Canucks again - for the sixth time in a row - as the best points scorer. However, he achieved “only” 35 goals and 84 points. In the 2004/05 season, when the NHL was not playing because of the lockout , he played in a few games for his home team MoDo .

In May 2009 he announced his retirement from active competitive sport, but returned to the ice in November 2009 to help his home club MODO Hockey out of the crisis. The Vancouver Canucks announced in July 2010 that they would hang their number 19 jersey on the roof of the stadium on December 11, 2010 before a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning . It will not be awarded to any other Canucks player. Näslund decided to finally end his playing career after the 2009/10 season and was signed by MODO Hockey as General Manager in December 2010. He occupied this post until the end of the 2013/14 season.
