Michael Dennis Liut (born January 7, 1956 in Weston , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the St. Louis Blues , Hartford Whalers and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League and the Cincinnati Stingers in World Hockey Association played.

Career

Mike Liut began his career in 1973 with the CCHA for Bowling Green State University . In 1977 he won the CCHA championship with them. That same year, he was named the best college player of the year.

As early as 1976 he was selected in May in the WHA Amateur Player Draft by the New England Whalers . Just a month later, chose him St. Louis Blues in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1976 in the fifth round at position 56 drafted. The New England Whalers transferred the WHA rights to Liut to the Cincinnati Stingers .

In the fall of 1977 Mike Liut moved to the WHA and played there for two years for Cincinnati. 1979 dissolved the WHA and the St. Louis Blues made use of their rights to Liut received in the draft and brought him into the team. He was immediately number 1 on the team and achieved a combined 65 wins in his first two years. In 1981 he was nominated for the Lester B. Pearson Award for Best Player and for the Hart Memorial Trophy for Most Valuable Player of the NHL . He was able to win the Lester B. Pearson Award, the winner of which is chosen by the players, with one vote ahead of Wayne Gretzky . He was also elected to the NHL First Allstar Team .

The following seasons were not so successful and he was transferred to the Hartford Whalers in February 1985 . He was the first goalkeeper for the Whalers for three years and had most of the league in the 1986/87 season with four shutouts . In 1988/89 he struggled with injuries and lost his regular place to Peter Sidorkiewicz .

During the 1989/90 season he was transferred to the Washington Capitals . There he took up the position as a back-up gala. In 1992 he suffered a herniated disc , which meant that Liut had to end his career as a player.

From 1995 to 1998, Mike Liut was the assistant coach of the University of Michigan ice hockey team .
