William Robert "Bill" Guerin (born November 9, 1970 in Worcester , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player and current - functional , who in the course of his active career between 1991 and 2010, among other things, 1403 games for the New Jersey Devils , Edmonton Oilers , Boston Bruins , Dallas Stars , St. Louis Blues , San Jose Sharks , New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger . Guerin, who took part in the NHL All-Star Game four times, celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the New Jersey Devils by winning the Stanley Cup in 1995 and the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009 as well as in the jersey of the United States national team by winning the World Cup of Hockey 1996 . Since August 2019 he has been the general manager of the Minnesota Wild in the NHL.
Career
Guerin was selected in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft as fifth in the first round by the New Jersey Devils , having previously played in the American Junior League New England Junior Hockey League at the Springfield Olympics for four years. He then moved for two seasons to Boston College , which played in the Hockey East of the National Collegiate Athletic Association .
Initially used more often in the American Hockey League with the farm team of the New Jersey Devils, the Utica Devils from the American Hockey League, Guerin nevertheless completed his first eleven NHL games in the 1991/92 season , in which he scored three goals and one assist could. In the following season , the number of his missions in the NHL increased to 65 and Guerin developed from the 1993/94 season to a fixture in the roster of the Devils. In the shortened 1994/95 season he celebrated his greatest success in the NHL with the Stanley Cup victory of the Devils. Long since become a permanent staff in New Jersey, Bill Guerin moved during the 1997/98 season , together with Valeri Selepukin to the Edmonton Oilers . In return, Jason Arnott and Bryan Muir came to the east coast. The American stayed with the Oilers until the end of 2000. After about a quarter of the 2000/01 season , Guerin moved in exchange for Anson Carter and various draft picks to the Boston Bruins , where he ultimately played until the end of the 2001/02 season. At the beginning of the 2002/03 season he signed a new four-year contract with the Dallas Stars . After a disappointing 2005/06 season for him in Dallas, Guerin signed a contract in St. Louis on July 3, 2006 , where the right-handed shooter quickly found his way back to his old strength and as a result was nominated for the 2007 NHL All-Star Game . It was his fourth nomination for such a game after 2001 , 2003 and 2004 . On February 27, 2007 he was committed to a first-round draft pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft , Ville Nieminen and Jay Barriball of the San Jose Sharks , who had scheduled him as reinforcement for the playoffs.
After the season he moved to the New York Islanders as a free agent , where he was immediately named team captain. However, the experienced American could not help the team to the hoped-for success. Both in the 2007/08 season and the following year, the Islanders had no chance in the allocation of playoff places. Then Guerin was given on March 4, 2009 for a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 to the Pittsburgh Penguins , who had previously put striker Miroslav Šatan on the waiver list in order to be able to lift the contract of their new signing. At the end of the season, the striker celebrated the second Stanley Cup win of his career.
In the summer of 2010, his contract with the Penguins was not renewed and Guerin became a free agent . At the beginning of December of the same year, he announced his retirement at the age of 40. In June 2011, Guerin was hired by the Penguins as a player development coach . In this role, he is responsible for the player development of the young players in Pittsburgh's farm teams . In the summer of 2014, he was promoted to assistant general manager of the Penguins. Three years later he was also entrusted with the business of general manager of Pittsburgh's cooperation partner Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the AHL.
In August 2019, Guerin finally returned to the NHL as general manager when he succeeded Paul Fenton, who was sacked after just one season, at the Minnesota Wild .
International
With Team USA , Guerin won the silver medal at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City . More Olympic participation was in 1998 in Nagano and 2006 in Turin . He also played at the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 , where he won the gold medal, and in 2004 .
During his time as a junior player, he played for the US team in the World Junior Championships in 1989 and 1990 .
