Robert Frederick "Bob" Murray (born November 26, 1954 in Kingston , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey defender and currently general manager and interim coach of the Anaheim Ducks in the National Hockey League . During his career he played for the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL.

Career as a player

Bob Murray began his career as a hockey player in 1971 in the Québec Major Junior Hockey League with the Cornwall Royals . He left this after three years to play during the 1974/75 season for the Dallas Black Hawks , the then farm team of the Chicago Black Hawks from the Central Professional Hockey League . He had previously been selected as the 52nd player overall in the third round of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft by the Chicago Black Hawks. In a total of 15 seasons Murray played in over 1000 games in the National Hockey League for Chicago. Only at the beginning of the 1988/89 season he was for 18 games in the meantime in the squad of Chicago's former farm team Saginaw Hawks from the International Hockey League .

For the 35th National Hockey League All-Star Game , he was elected to the All-Star Team of the Campbell Conference .

Career as a manager

After the end of his active career, Murray was 1991 sports director at his ex-club Chicago Blackhawks, the sixth general manager he was on July 3, 1997. He held this post until November 1997. Murray was then hired by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim as a consultant to the scouting department. From 1999 to 2005, the Canadian worked as a professional scout for the Vancouver Canucks .

On July 14, 2005, the Anaheim Ducks named Murray vice president of their ice hockey division. In this position he won the Stanley Cup with the Ducks in 2007 . On July 9, 2008, Murray became general manager of the Iowa Chops , the Ducks' new farm team, before he replaced Brian Burke as general manager of the Anaheim Ducks on November 12, 2008 .

In 2013 he was nominated together with Ray Shero from the Pittsburgh Penguins and Marc Bergevin from the Canadiens de Montréal as one of three finalists for the 2010 NHL General Manager of the Year Award . In the 2012/13 season , which was shortened due to a lockout , the Anaheim Ducks won the Pacific Division for the second time in their history , reinforced by the free-agent commitments of Viktor Fasth , Bryan Allen , Sheldon Souray and Daniel Winnik . They were the second best team in the Western Conference after the Chicago Blackhawks and with 66 points they were the third most successful team in the league in the regular season. In addition, in March 2013 Murray managed to tie two team supports, captain Ryan Getzlaf and winger Corey Perry , to the franchise with new contracts until 2021.

In February 2019, after the dismissal of Randy Carlyle , he took over the position of head coach at the Ducks on an interim basis, which was filled again for the 2019/20 season in the person of Dallas Eakins .
