Matthew Michael "Matt" Irwin (born November 29, 1987 in Victoria , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Anaheim Ducks from the National Hockey League since February 2020 .
Career
Irwin began his career in the 2004/05 season with the Nanaimo Clippers in the British Columbia Hockey League , the junior league of his home province. After four seasons, the defender moved to the university team of the University of Massachusetts Amherst and played there between 2008 and 2010 in Hockey East , which is integrated into the game operations of the NCAA .
In March 2010 he was signed by the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League , where he was initially on the ice with the Worcester Sharks farm team in the American Hockey League for the next three years . In 2012 he played for the Sharks in the NHL for the first time and has firmly established himself in the squad there since the beginning of the 2013/14 season . In March 2013, his contract was extended by two years until the end of the 2014/15 season.
This contract was then not renewed, so that he joined the Boston Bruins as a free agent in July 2015 and signed a one-year contract there. In July 2016, he became a free agent again and subsequently signed a two-year contract with the Nashville Predators . In Nashville, Irwin established himself - in contrast to the previous year with the Bruins - again as an NHL regular and reached the Stanley Cup final with the Predators, where they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins . After about three and a half years in Nashville, the Canadian was handed over to the Anaheim Ducks for the trade deadline in February 2020, including a six- round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2022 , while Korbinian Holzer moved to Nashville in return .
