Michael Del Zotto (born June 24, 1990 in Stouffville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player of Italian descent who has been under contract with the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League since July 2019 and plays for them in the position of defender .
Career
Michael Del Zotto began his career in 2005 with the Markham Waxers in a sub-division junior league in Ontario. Especially with his 30 goals and 90 assists he was able to draw attention to himself and in the summer of 2006 he moved to the Canadian junior league Ontario Hockey League to the Oshawa Generals , who had previously selected him at the OHL Priority Selection . For the Oshawa Generals he played two and a half years until January 2009. This led to the fact that the title contender, the London Knights , signed him along with John Tavares and Daryl Borden to win the championship of the OHL. In the semifinals of the 2008/09 season against the Windsor Spitfires, however, they were defeated in the best-of-seven series with 4: 1, with all games being decided in extra time.
Previously, the defender was selected in the first round in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in 20th place by the New York Rangers , who got him to sign his first NHL contract in May 2009. In 2012 Del Zotto played with the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers during the NHL lockout . In January 2014, he was transferred from the New York Rangers to the Nashville Predators, who received defender Kevin Klein in return . On August 6, 2014, Del Zotto joined the Philadelphia Flyers . He signed a one-year contract there, which was subsequently extended for two more years. After his employment contract expired in summer 2017, Del Zotto joined the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent .
He spent almost a year and a half in Vancouver until he was handed over to the Anaheim Ducks in January 2019 , which in return sent Luke Schenn and a seven-round vote for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft to the Canucks. For the Southern Californians, the defender only played twelve games until the end of February 2019 before he was exchanged for a six-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues . With these he won the Stanley Cup in the following playoffs in 2019 , where he only played seven games in the regular season and no playoff game for the Blues. But since he reached the limit of 41 regular season games, he was immortalized on the trophy.
In July 2019, Del Zotto signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks, returning to California .
International
Del Zotto played for his home country at the 2010 World Cup in Germany . He was used in five tournament games for the maple leaves , in which he remained without points. The team finished in seventh place at the end of the tournament.
