The Avenida Presidente Roque Sáenz Peña is a main street in the San Nicolás district of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It is also known as Diagonal Norte among the city's residents . It runs in a southeast-northwest direction and thus cuts through the checkerboard pattern in which Buenos Aires is largely laid out. The Avenida Presidente Roque Sáenz Peña was named after the former Argentine President Roque Sáenz Peña , who ruled the country from 1910 to 1914 and enforced universal suffrage, secret voting and the electoral roll during his tenure.

The Avenida Presidente Roque Sáenz Peña begins at the northwest corner of Plaza de Mayo . It then runs in a north-westerly direction and crosses the following streets: Calle Perú, Calle Bartolomé Miter, Calle Maipú, Calle Juan D. Perón, Calle Esmeralda, Calle Sarmiento, Calle Suipacha, Calle Carlos Pellegrini and then reaches the Plaza de la República , Location of the Obelisco de Buenos Aires and the intersection of Avenida 9 de Julio and Avenida Corrientes . After the Plaza de la República, it continues diagonally, crosses Calle Cerrito and finally ends at the intersection of Calle Lavalle and Avenida Libertad, Plaza Lavalle, opposite the Palacio de Justicia (Palace of Justice).

The most important structures along the Avenida are the Edificio Menéndez-Behety near the eastern end and the Obelisk.

Line D of the Buenos Aires Metro runs under Avenida Presidente Roque Sáenz Peña . The stops of the line on the Avenida are called Catedral and 9 de Julio . A third station, Tribunales , is near its western end. Line B stops at the nearby Carlos Pellegrini stop . Line C can be reached at Diagonal Norte station.
