NHL rookie of the month
The NHL Rookie of the Month award has been given to the best newcomer to the National Hockey League since the 1991/92 season , alongside Player of the Week and Player of the Month . The award is based on the NHL Player of the Month , which has been awarded since 1987.
Only one player was chosen for March and April for the first two years. After that, the last winner was awarded at the end of March. No election took place during the strike in the 1994/95 season , so the first winner was chosen in February 1994. A rookie of the month was chosen for March and April 1994. Four years followed in which there was a separate winner for April, since then no winner has been chosen for the two weeks in April. In February 1998, 2006 and 2010 the league waived an election because of the participation of the NHL players in the Winter Olympics .
Only Teemu Selänne and Connor McDavid were elected three times in one season. Nicklas Lidström , Martin Brodeur , Daniel Alfredsson , Scott Fraser , Jewgeni Nabokow , Ilja Kowaltschuk , Tyler Arnason , Alexander Owetschkin , Jewgeni Malkin , Ryan Nugent-Hopkins , Ondřej Palát , Johnny Gaudreau , William Nylander , Brock Boeser , Clayton Keller , Elias Pettersson , Jordan Binnington and Victor Olofsson were each two times rookie of the month.
In December 2001, Dany Heatley and Ilja Kowaltschuk, two rookies of the Atlanta Thrashers, were so dominant that they both received the award together.
