Sam William Gagner (born August 10, 1989 in London , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League since February 2020 and plays there on the position of the center .

Career

Sam Gagner played in the junior league Greater Toronto Hockey League for the Toronto Marlboros from 2001 to 2005 , before moving to the United States Hockey League for the Sioux City Musketeers , where he was the team's second-best scorer with 46 points in his first season was.

Gagner during the 2007 Super Series

In the summer of 2005 Gagner was selected by the London Knights in the Entry Draft of the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League in the fourth round. He was considered a clear favorite to be drafted in the first round, but since he had already declared in advance that he would prefer to play for the University of Wisconsin – Madison in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), he was passed over by the teams. He finally made a different decision and joined the London Knights in the summer of 2006. There he formed an attack line with Patrick Kane and Sjarhej Kaszizyn . Gagner reached the final of the OHL playoffs with the Knights and was the league's fifth best scorer during the season. His attack line scored a total of 394 points over the season.

In early 2007, Gagner won the gold medal at the Junior World Championship with the Canadian U20 national team .

Because of his great talent, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round in sixth position. After convincing performances in the Super Series 2007 with a Canadian U20 selection and in the training camp of the Oilers in September, Gagner received a contract with the Oilers and was able to prevail in the NHL squad. He quickly developed as a specialist in shootout and was able to decide a few games. From the game, however, he rarely scored in the first half of the season. In the second half of the season he was able to increase his points yield and he collected 13 scorer points within twelve games in February 2008, which is why he was named NHL rookie of the month . He ended the season with 13 goals and 36 assists and thus finished fifth in the rookies scorer list . In the following three seasons he just couldn't get close to this value with two times 41 and one time 42 scorer points. And he did not complete the 2011/12 season at the level of his rookie year. Nevertheless, he managed to set a franchise record for the Edmonton Oilers by Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey on February 2, 2012 . In the 8-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks , the striker scored four goals and prepared the remaining four. A game with at least eight scorer points had only been achieved by twelve players in NHL history, the last time being Mario Lemieux on December 31, 1989. That a player was involved in all eight goals of his team had only succeeded once in league history.

After seven years in Edmonton, the Oilers gave him to the Tampa Bay Lightning in June 2014 and received Teddy Purcell in return . Tampa, however, sent Gagner and Brandon Crombeen directly to the Arizona Coyotes , who submitted a six- round vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . Gagner also only spent one season with the Coyotes before he was given a success-based draft option to the Philadelphia Flyers in June 2015 , with the Coyotes receiving Nicklas Grossmann and the still under contract Chris Pronger in return . After his contract expired at the end of the 2015/16 season , the striker joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as a free agent in August 2016 .

In the Blue Jackets jersey, the Canadian completed his best season in the NHL to date with 50 scorer points. Nevertheless, he did not extend his contract in Columbus and joined the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent in July 2017 . There he played the entire 2017/18 season, but was loaned to the Toronto Marlies from the AHL in October 2018 . The Canucks then finally gave the attacker to the Edmonton Oilers in February 2019, so that Gagner returned to his old place of work. In return, Ryan Spooner moved to Vancouver. He was active in Edmonton for a year before he was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings for the trade deadline in February 2020, including a second-round vote for the NHL Entry Drafts in 2020 and 2021 . In exchange for this, the Oilers received Andreas Athanasiou and Ryan Kuffner .
