Pandanus boninensis is a species of the screw trees ( Pandanus ) in the family of the screw tree plants (Pandanaceae).

description

Pandanus boninensis is an evergreen plant that can reach heights of up to 6 meters. It forms stilt roots. The fruits are stone fruits.

Distribution and location

The home of Pandanus boninensis is in the western Pacific on the Ogasawara Islands , which politically belong to Japan and are about 1000 km south of Tokyo . Like many other plant species endemic to this archipelago , Pandanus boninensis has only a very small distribution area.

The plant prefers to grow on rocky ground. It is part of the dry forest communities "Distylium-Schima" and "Raphiolepsis-Livistona". In the former it occurs mainly with Syzygium buxifolium , in the latter with Livistona chinensis var. Bonensis and Ochrosia nakaiana .

Systematics

The first description by the German botanist Otto Warburg was published in 1900. The species epitheton boninensis refers to the home of the plant; the Ogasawara Islands are also called the Bonin Islands.
