Lucas "Luke" Glendening (born April 28, 1989 in Grand Rapids , Michigan ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League since July 2013 . He took a path that was unusual for ice hockey players in that he played American football in parallel for a long time and only very late and by chance found a team at the University of Michigan that paved its way into professional sport.
Career
youth
Luke Glendening was born into an athletic family whose main focus was American football . So his father played in the early 1980s at the Bowling Green State University on the position of full backs , while his mother as a cheerleader occurred for the team. His younger brother Joe Glendening also plays American football and has played at Hillsdale College .
In his hometown, Luke Glendening attended East Grand Rapids Middle School and East Grand Rapids High School . In high school in particular , he performed equally well in baseball , football and ice hockey, although it became apparent that in order to pursue a professional career, he would have to choose one of the latter two sports. However, he did not do this, so that although he showed above-average performance in both football and ice hockey, he was not offered a sports scholarship from a university or college (unlike his father or brother) . As a result, after graduating from high school in the summer of 2007, he decided to attend the Hotchkiss School , a preparatory school in Lakeville , Connecticut . This exclusively with the aim of continuing to practice both sports and still receiving a corresponding scholarship.
During the football season, Pennsylvania State University showed a slight interest in him, but did not respond to him subsequently. Mid-December 2007 attended a Scout of the ice hockey team of the University of Michigan , the Hotchkiss School ; originally to watch a Glendening teammate. In the final of the tournament, however, the center scored two goals and at least secured the promise of the University of Michigan to consider him as a replacement for any vacant positions in the squad. After Max Pacioretty left the team for the NHL, the same place that he was offered and accepted in April 2008 became free.
University of Michigan
Thus, Glendening played with the beginning of the 2008/09 season for one of the best college teams in the USA, the University of Michigan Wolverines . In his first season, at the beginning of which it was not yet clear whether he could establish himself in the team at all, the attacker scored 10 points in 35 games, was awarded a scholarship and also received the Alton D. Simms Award as the player of the Wolverines who could improve the most excellent. In November 2009, at the beginning of his sophomore year, he was elected assistant captain and subsequently won the championship of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association with the team .
In the 2010/11 season, the Wolverines reached the final of the Frozen Four and were defeated in the game for the university championship of the entire United States of the University of Minnesota Duluth with 2: 3 after overtime . Glendening was also elected team captain, an office he held the following year, becoming the eighth player in Wolverines history to wear the "C" on his jersey for more than one season. He was also named the CCHA's best defensive attacker in the 2011/12 season.
Since Glendening was not considered in any NHL Entry Draft , he was able to complete his four years at the University of Michigan with a degree in political science . The 2011/12 season he ended with the Providence Bruins from the American Hockey League (AHL) under a trial contract; beyond that, however, he was not firmly committed.
Detroit Red Wings
In June 2012, the Grand Rapids Griffins from the AHL, the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings , signed him and thus had a player from Grand Rapids in their ranks for the first time in their history. For the time being, however, the center was handed over to the Griffins' cooperation partner, the Toledo Walleye from the ECHL , where he subsequently scored 21 points in 27 games. In view of these achievements he was called back to the Griffins, so that he no longer took part in the ECHL All-Star Game, for which he was nominated. Glendening also developed into a productive scorer in Grand Rapids, with 16 points in 24 playoff games making a significant contribution to the 2013 Calder Cup win.
The attacker also began the 2013/14 season with the Griffins in the AHL, but was appointed to the Red Wings NHL squad relatively quickly and established himself there straight away; The American came to a total of 61 missions in the regular season and playoffs. He set a negative record by not scoring a goal as a rookie attacker in his first 51 games for the Red Wings. He exceeded the previous high ( Cummy Burton , 43 games) from the 1950s, before he scored his first goal in the 52nd game in April 2014.
Nevertheless, Glendening was not sent back to the AHL and extended his contract in Detroit in April 2014 for another three years. In the following season 2014/15 he completed all competitive games (89) of the Red Wings as one of five players. In 2016, his contract was renewed for another four years. Since 2019 he has been one of Detroit's four assistant captains. Due to his physique-focused game and outstanding odds in the face-off , he is used in particular to defend against the most offensive attack lines of the opponent.
