Valtteri Filppula (born March 20, 1984 in Vantaa ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . Previously was center in the NHL for the New York Islanders , the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning active. With the Red Wings he won the Stanley Cup in the 2008 playoffs . With the Finnish national team he won, among other things, the bronze medal in the2010 Winter Olympics .
Career
Valtteri Filppula began his career in 2000 in the Jokerit Helsinki U18 team . After a good first season, he was able to switch to the junior senior squad in 2001. With his performance he fell on the scouts of the National Hockey League and the Detroit Red Wings and was selected in the summer of 2002 by Detroit in the third round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft at position 95. He stayed with the juniors for another year and was able to increase his points and thus show what qualities he has as a striker.
In 2003 he was brought to the Jokerit professionals in the SM-liiga . From the end of December 2003 to the beginning of January 2004, the Junior (U20) Ice Hockey World Championship took place. Finland won the bronze medal and Filppula was chosen to be on the tournament's all-star team. In the 2004/05 season, the league was upgraded by some NHL stars who had moved to Europe because of the lockout in the NHL. In the playoffs , Jokerit failed only in the final. Filppula scored 11 points in the 12 playoff games and was the second best scorer of his team in the finals.
In August 2005, he received his first contract with the Detroit Red Wings. The 2005/06 season he completed but mainly with the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Red Wings, in the AHL . There he was able to convince with 70 points, but was only used four times for Detroit during the season. After all, he was the first Finn to play an NHL game for the Detroit Red Wings.
The 2006/07 season Filppula completed completely with the Red Wings in the NHL and established himself on the position of the center. With the Red Wings he moved into the playoffs to the final of the Western Conference. In the following season he prevailed on the center position of the second attack row and developed significantly with 19 goals and 17 assists. In the playoffs he got a total of eleven points, scoring two goals in the final series against the Pittsburgh Penguins when the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup .
In the summer of 2008 Filppula received a new contract with Red Wings with a term of five years. In July 2013, the Finn signed a five-year deal worth $ 25 million with the Tampa Bay Lightning . After three and a half years, however, the Lightning gave it to the Philadelphia Flyers for the trade deadline on March 1, 2017, including a four-round and a success-based seven-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . In return, Mark Streit moved to Tampa.
After the 2017/18 season, his expiring contract in Philadelphia was not extended, so he joined the New York Islanders as a free agent . In the same vein, he returned to the Detroit Red Wings in July 2019. In February 2020, he played his 1,000th regular season game in the NHL.
