Mark Streit (born December 11, 1977 in Bern ) is a former Swiss ice hockey player . The defender played a total of 820 games for the Montréal Canadiens , New York Islanders , Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League , winning the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2017 . At the time of his retirement in October 2017, he was the Swiss NHL record player in the categories of completed games (786), goals (96), assists (338) and scorer points (434). In addition to his time in North America, Streit was also on the ice in almost 500 games in the domestic National League A , winning the Swiss championship with the ZSC Lions in 2001 . On an international level, he represented the Swiss national team at numerous world championships and at four Olympic Winter Games , regularly leading the Swiss - as well as the New York Islanders - as team captain. In 2020, Streit was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame .
Career
The SC Bern junior began his professional career in 1995 at the age of 17 at HC Friborg-Gottéron , from where he moved to HC Davos for three years in 1996 . During this time he made his breakthrough and made the leap to the national team.
After his engagement with Davos, he made a detour to North America in 1999, where he played for the Utah Grizzlies in the International Hockey League , Tallahassee Tiger Sharks in the East Coast Hockey League and Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League . In the 2000/01 season , Streit moved back to Switzerland to the ZSC Lions , where he had a contract until 2007.
The captain of the Swiss national team was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2004 by the Montréal Canadiens in the ninth round at position 262. For the 2005/06 season he got an offer from the Canadiens. After a short time he was already playing regularly and was often used in power play. During the season he played more than half of the games, in the playoffs he was used in one of the six games. In the 2006/07 season , Streit scored 36 points in 76 games, including ten goals. The Canadiens used the trained defender mainly in storms as a wing and in power play.
Streit achieved his breakthrough in the NHL in the 2007/08 season , when he scored 13 goals and gave 49 assists (62 scorer points) in 81 games and ultimately became the third-best defender in the entire NHL.
In early July 2008, Mark moved within the National Hockey League from the Montréal Canadiens to the New York Islanders . The Bernese defender signed a five-year contract with the Long Island team worth $ 20.5 million.
In the 2008/09 season he was after a short time the statistically best defender of the Islanders, as he also plays here regularly and sets important accents especially in the power play. Streit was nominated for the NHL All-Star Game in January 2009 , making it the first Swiss player to play in the national team. Although the Islanders missed the playoffs and conceded 78 more goals in the regular season, Mark Streit had a positive plus / minus balance of 6 and was the team's best scorer with 56 points. As in the previous season, dispute with the Islanders did not reach the playoffs in the 2009/10 season . However, the team showed significantly better performances. Mark Streit was one of the top performers along with players like John Tavares , Kyle Okposo and Matt Moulson .
During the preparation for the 2010/11 season, Streit injured his shoulder severely and was unable to complete the 2010/11 season.
In preparation for the following season , Mark Streit was named captain of the Islanders. This makes him the first Swiss to captain an NHL franchise. As in previous years, the New York Islanders could not reach the playoffs in the 2011/12 season. Personally, Streit was able to convince and collected 47 scorer points in 82 games. Due to the lockout in the NHL, he returned to SC Bern in September 2012. Back in the NHL, Mark Streit qualified for the playoffs with the New York Islanders for the first time. In the first round, however, the Pittsburgh Penguins failed with 2: 4 wins. As in previous seasons, Streit was the defender with the most scorer points for the Islanders.
In June 2013 he was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers . Then Streit signed a four-year deal worth $ 21.5 million with the Philadelphia Flyers. Because the salary cap was exceeded a few days later, both Ilja Brysgalow and Daniel Brière were paid out prematurely from their contracts ( buy out ) to make room for dispute. He scored his first goal in the Flyers dress on November 27, 2013, away against Tampa Bay Lightning. At the end of the 2013/2014 regular season, Mark Streit had 44 scorer points (10 goals and 34 assists) in 82 games. The Philadelphia Flyers qualified for the playoffs. There they were defeated in the first round by the New York Rangers with 3: 4 wins, with arguments getting 1 goal and 2 assists.
In the 2014/2015 season, Streit with the Philadelphia Flyers missed the playoffs. Personally, however, he was able to convince, so he played all 82 games of the regular season, with 9 goals and 42 assists. A year later, the Flyers managed to qualify for the playoffs. In the regular season, Mark Streit missed 20 games due to an injury. In the end, he completed 62 games (6 goals and 17 assists). In the first playoff round Philadelphia lost to the Washington Capitals with 2-4 wins.
After almost three and a half years in the organization of the flyers, Streit was handed over to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the trade deadline on March 1, 2017 . In return, Philadelphia received Valtteri Filppula as well as a four-round and a performance-based seven-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . However, the Lightning immediately gave the Swiss to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a four-round vote in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft . In addition, the Lightning took over half of his salary after Philadelphia had already taken over almost five percent in the previous store.
With the Penguins, Streit subsequently won the Stanley Cup and was also immortalized on the trophy, although he had not played the required 41 regular season games or a final. In July 2017 he returned to the Montréal Canadiens as a free agent and signed a one-year contract there, which was terminated in October 2017 after two competitive games. A little later, the Swiss announced the end of his active career.
In 2020, Streit was elected to the IIHF Hall of Fame .
International
Mark Streit took part in several world championships with the Swiss national team . He was also a member of the Swiss team at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City , 2006 in Turin, 2010 in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi. Streit was the captain of this team for several years. He made a total of 200 international matches for Switzerland, scoring 31 goals and 60 assists. Dispute received 156 penalty minutes.
He also represented the Europe team at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey , where he finished second with the team.

At the beginning of March 2018, he became an expert on ice hockey broadcasts for the SRF . On May 1, 2020 it was announced that Mark Streit was a minority shareholder in SC Bern and would do more to promote the club's youth in the future.
