The season 1997/98 was the 60th regular season of the National League A . In the playoff final , EV Zug won the Swiss championship against HC Davos , while the ZSC Lions won the league in the playouts. The losers of the playouts, the SC Herisau and the HC La Chaux-de-Fonds , took only the back places in the league qualification with the NLB master, the SC Langnau , so that the Langnauer rose to the NLA and Herisau and La Chaux -de-funds descended.

mode

The eleven teams played two double rounds of 20 games each. The best eight teams determined the Swiss champions in playoff style. Quarter-finals , semi-finals and the final were each played according to the Best of Seven mode .

Since the NLA was to be reduced to ten teams, the last three teams determined in the play-outs (eight games per team), taking half of the points from the preliminary round, the two teams that were against the champions of National League B for relegation had to play.

Preliminary round

Four teams determined the league qualification: EV Zug with the best defense, which only allowed three home defeats (including two against HC Davos), finally came in first ahead of Friborg-Gottéron . HC Davos in third place justifiably hoped for another title win. The biggest surprise was the fourth place, HC Ambrì-Piotta . The club, which had fought relegation in the previous season, was able to keep up with the top clubs thanks to a strong attack by Oleg Petrow and Ihor Tschybyrjew . For the incumbent SC Bern, however, it was a disappointing season, which was marked by financial problems.
