The 1961/62 season was the 24th regular staging of the National League A , the highest Swiss league in ice hockey . For the first time in the club's history, the EHC Visp became Swiss champions, while the EHC Basel-Rotweiss was relegated to the NLB in terms of sport, but later still managed to stay in the league due to a league increase by two teams for the following season.

As in the previous year, the league was played in a common main round. Each of the eight teams played back and forth against each group opponent, making the total number of games per team 14. The first in the table became Swiss champions, while the bottom of the table had to compete against the best second division team in the relegation to avoid relegation. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a tie. If you lost, you didn't get any points.

Relegation

The HC Villars originally won the relegation against the EHC Basel-Rotweiss as the best second division team, but the Swiss Ice Hockey Association subsequently decided to add two teams to the league for the following season, which meant that Basel was still relegated. In addition to Basel and Villars, the NLB runner-up EHC Kloten was also promoted to the NLA.
