The 1977/78 season was the 40th regular staging of the National League A , the highest Swiss league in ice hockey . For the first time in the club's history, EHC Biel became Swiss champions, while HC Ambrì-Piotta was relegated to NLB.

In a common main round, each of the eight teams played four games against each group opponent, making the total number of games per team 28. The first place in the main round was champion. The last placed in the main round was relegated to the NLB. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a tie. If you lost, you didn't get any points.
