The 1980/81 season was the 43rd regular staging of the National League A , the highest Swiss league in ice hockey . For the second time in its club history, EHC Biel became Swiss champions, while Lausanne HC was relegated to NLB.

mode

In a common main round, each of the eight teams played four games against each group opponent, making the total number of games per team 28. The six best-placed teams qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played, with the points taken from the main round. The last two placed had to compete in the relegation with the four best teams of the NLB to stay in the league. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a tie. If you lost, you didn't get any points.
