Artists' Quarter Zittau 2010

The artists' quarter Zittau , also known under the project name Mandauer Glanz , is a residential area in Zittau in the extreme southeast of Saxony in the triangle of Germany , Poland and the Czech Republic . It is the largest pop art district in Germany in terms of area.

location

The artists' quarter is in the center of Zittau and is bordered to the north by Grüne Strasse and to the east by Rosenstrasse.

Emergence

The artists' quarter was designed in early 2009. The renovation measures were implemented by the Berlin project developer Sparkling AG under the direction of the architect Conny Gloger. In addition to the modernization of six GDR prefabricated buildings from the 1980s, the aim was to upgrade a city quarter in the historic center of Zittau as a tourist magnet. 10,000 m² of living space with a total of 180 apartments had been renovated by the end of 2010. After initial skepticism, the artists' quarter was accepted by the population. After an initial vacancy rate of 66 percent when the renovation work began, the artists' quarter is almost completely let.

The project was also funded by the European Regional Development Fund ( ERDF ).

architectural art

The idea and the implementation of art in buildings in the artists' quarter come from the sculptor Sergej Alexander Dott . He realized a fantasy world on the building facades. Art should act as a catalyst and make the area more attractive. A 16-meter-long, gold-colored archway in the form of a DNA double helix acts as the gateway to the historic city center of Zittau .

The motifs created by Dott are varied: children playing on the house wall, flower patterns, Celtic and Egyptian symbols, and sculptures made of angels and sheep. Fresh and bold colors as well as various figures and symbols reflect the lightness of the new design of the quarter. This is intended to clarify the connection between man and nature.

The sculptor Sergej Alexander Dott has already designed other building facades, such as the "Kuuuhnst facade" in Berlin's Kollwitzstrasse and five large apartment blocks with eye-catching installation art for the "Obersteiner Weg" project in Berlin-Weißensee .

reception

The Lord Mayor of Zittau, Arnd Voigt , commented on the artists' quarter of Zittau as follows in 2010:

“The realization of the art project opens up sustainable development opportunities for the inner-city residential area. The external appearance has undergone an enormous change and has contributed to the fact that the previously not exactly attractive downtown area of Rosenstrasse / Grüne Strasse is once again more popular with residents and appears to be a new tourist attraction. The now visible result of the courageous and not entirely undisputed project shows that experiments can also succeed in historical cities. "
