The season 2019/20 was the third regular hosting after the renaming of the former Swiss National League A in the National League , the highest ice hockey league of Switzerland . The regular season consisted of 50 qualifying rounds. Then it should continue with the playoffs or playouts. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the season was canceled after the qualification.

Championship cancellation

Due to the coronavirus epidemic , the federal government decided on February 28, 2020 to ban events with more than 1000 participants until March 15, 2020. The National League therefore decided to play the last two rounds of qualification without spectators. After that, the league suspended the game for the time being. On March 11, 2020, the canton of Ticino declared a state of emergency. As a consequence, all ice rinks in the canton of Ticino were closed. As a result, regular championship operation was no longer possible, so that the association ended the championship in all leagues and levels after consulting the clubs. In addition, there were neither champions nor promoted and relegated.

mode

The twelve teams played two double rounds of 22 games each. In addition, there were six additional encounters per team against three opponents, which were based on a regional division (east: HC Ambrì-Piotta, HC Lugano, HC Davos, SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, center: EHC Biel, SCL Tigers, EV Zug, ZSC Lions , West: Genève-Servette HC, Lausanne HC, HC Friborg-Gottéron, SC Bern); In total, each team played 50 qualifying games. Then the best eight teams should determine the Swiss champion in the knockout system . All playoff series should be played according to the best-of-seven mode .

In the placement round and the subsequent play-outs , the last four teams should determine the team that has to play against the champions of the Swiss League to stay in the league.
