Ivars Punnenovs (born May 30, 1994 in Riga ) is a Latvian ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the SCL Tigers in the National League A since the 2015/16 season .

Career

Born in Latvia , Punnenovs came to Kreuzlingen in Switzerland at the age of 15 due to the lack of support for young talent in his home country . First he played at PIKES EHC Oberthurgau in 1965 , then switched to the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers via EHC Kloten (U20 Elite) . For this he made his debut in the National League A in the 2013/14 season . For the 2015/16 season he switched to the SCL Tigers .

Due to sufficient appearances in Swiss junior leagues, Punnenovs plays with a Swiss license and therefore does not fall under the foreign contingent in the National League.

International

Punnenovs played through the various young talent selections of the Latvians. After taking part in the 2011 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival with the U17s , he played with the U18s at the 2012 World Cup . With the Latvian U20 , he took part in the 2013 World Cup in the top division and, after relegation there, to the 2014 World Cup in Division I, when he achieved the best catch quota and the lowest goals against goals of the tournament.

He made his debut for the Latvian men's national team on April 19, 2014 in Riga against the Russian national team . The then 19-year-old was able to celebrate a shutout at his first appearance . He blocked all 48 shots by the opponent and thus ensured the surprising 1-0 victory for his team. At the 2017 World Cup , he took part in a major tournament for the first time and made his first World Cup appearance in the 5-0 draw against Russia.
